I was amazed at how completely accessible and non-threatening the information and terminology came across in this book. I am not even a film student, but as a newlywed and expectant mother-to-be, I have recently taken a passionate interest in improving my home movie making skills. My goal is to be able to shoot, edit and archive videos of the welcoming home of our newborn and other family functions for sharing on the web as well as other future uses. I learned so much in such a short time from this book, I’m convinced that by using the tools and following the steps laid out in the book (especially the shot composition and lighting techniques) I will now be able to shoot some great home movies that are actually high-quality, well-produced videos, as opposed to ones that look like, well… home movies!

This book has nice, lean chapters that are easy to read and understand. I love it when information is presented in brief chunks like that without a lot of unnecessary fluff. After reading it, I feel as if I have a good foundation in each of the many aspects of production that I can now go out and continue to build on. The supporting illustrations are extremely helpful in reinforcing the concepts discussed in the book. They also make for some pretty cool artwork too!

I’m a youth group counselor who volunteered my group of 12 and 13 year olds to make a compelling video as part of a contest to promote our youth program. Only problem was that I had never shot a video on anything other than my phone. So I scrambled for a quick but comprehensive read to help guide us through short film making process… and “Film Crew” ended up fitting the bill perfectly.

To make a long story short, we were pitted against another team whose counselor picked a 380-page book, that not unlike his team’s video, he never even finished. Where as my little “film crew” won the $500 prize and our video is starting to get some pretty good ratings on YouTube. There are so many filmmaking short cuts and video production tips & tricks in this film production manual. By just doing each of the steps in order, you will have the ability to put out a complete video/film project after completing the ten short chapters.

The bottom line was that my group was able to successfully produce a completed video project that started by “brainstorming”, then writing the script, location scouting, and ultimately shooting and editing the “short film”, all within a 14 day deadline. I’m actually going to read “Film Crew” again in order to really absorb the information more, now that I am not under so much pressure. I highly recommend this one.
