To write a book adaptation screenplay do you need permission from the author?
Hi, I am writing a bbok adaption of a book, and was wondering if I have to get permission from the author? If so do I just contact the author and ask if I can write a screenplay, or do I need to go to court or whatever. I live in the UK

You contact the person who owns the publishing rights for the book and ask for permission. You will probably have to pay royalties.

YES…. you need to do the homework becauue you may find out that it is already in the works.
But…. I have seen where a few changes here and there without affecting the story are fine without consent.
How many times have you seen hollywood comeout with the same movie more or less.

I contacted Pete Hamill directly using the email address on his website, asking if anyone owned the rights to one of his novels. With most authors, this is possible. With really big authors, you may get a form letter back telling you how to contact someone.

To write it no. To sell it I certainly hope so. No offense to you but you are using someone elses work to open it up in a different genre.
Just my two sense.

You can write anything you like- if you try to sell it you will need to work out a deal with the publishers- its probably better to actually have a completed script before you approach the publishers- rather than saying you have an “idea” for the script.
