If you are starting out as a film fan and are interested in the process of film making then how do you go about learning what you need to know? There seems to be many different ways into the film industry and people have varied advice about how to go about it. Well there are several paths open to you to begin with:

Read as much as you can on the subjects that interest you – acting, drama, animation, producing, directing – whatever it is there really is no excuse to not get started with this one. You can read biographies, technical manuals, American Cinematographer Magazine and countless others. This will inform your later choices about the area that really appeals to you.

Join on-line groups and forums based on aspects film making that you like – there are many of these – for instance CML (Cinematography mailing list) is a good one for everything to do with digital and film photography.

Make a short film and submit it to competitions and festivals – use any image device or camera you can find, such as the “Flip” or a camcorder and shoot something – use your friends and family. Once you’ve done it, get it out to a few festivals. If it doesn’t do much the first time, try again. Enter into a film school or media course – From short four week courses to weekends to longer two year courses, there are a lot of options to choose from. The best courses have a highly practical element and this is what you need – hands on time. No-one in the business is interested in a certificate – they want to see what you’ve done.

Apply for work in a junior position within a production company or related business – This is the runner and personal assistant route. You will work like a dog for a while until you’ve proved yourself to your employers. If you have worked hard and are still there after a year and haven’t been given an opportunity – get out, they’re taking the piss, and you can do better.

You’ll find out which one of these ‘paths’ is for you, given time. If you choose the wrong path don’t worry. The most important thing is to keep going. It’s all about momentum and building your experience. Don’t stop moving forward because before you know it, you’ve been doing it for a couple of years and you’ve made two, three or four films and have more experience than you realise. This will hold you in good stead for the future. Think of your film career as a marathon and not a sprint.

Pages: Prev

So, you have a concept down that you believe is perfect, now it is time to write the script, but where do you begin? If you are a beginner, make sure you start on the right foot by getting a professional writing program (usually Final Draft or Movie Magic Screenwriter). By getting a professional writing program you will develop good habits rather than bad ones and will assist members of your crew such as the first assistant director, unit production manager and other key department’s heads to break down your script. This is critical when budgeting, which will be in another article.

In writing the script, it’s important to know who you are writing it for and for how long. A commercial can be aired in a variety of lengths from; Twenty-seconds, thirty seconds and a minute in length. So, there is no time to waste. Come right out of the starting blocks with an impact. Whether it’s the location, spokesman or the product, present it right away and keep your audience involved.

Keep in mind the budget that has been in place when you are writing the commercial. Don’t put car explosions or major visual effects if you cannot afford it. Keep it simple but effective if you have a small budget. As a writer, don’t be surprised if there are changes to the script once the director, producer or advertising agency has reviewed it. It happens all the time. So, leave the ego at home. Depending where you are in the country, don’t forget about the seasonal change. Today, weather patterns are ever changing. Plan for it.

Okay, now that you have a vision of how you will write your script, you decide to choose the beautiful setting of Hollywood California, where the celebrities, professional crews and locations are great. Now, that you are making great progress on your writing, you suddenly come to a pause with a deep thought, and realize, you have just written the opening scene that involves a male celebrity spokesman, but don’t know how to get one. Getting that celebrity will be covered in the next few articles.

Now that you have the opening and it’s impactful, what’s next? How about statistics, surveys, demographics? Who is your target audience? After the opening, one should go for the kill and the writer needs to address this in a creative way (or not) and can be summed up with one question. Why do I have to buy this product? You writers out there need to answer this question or you will lose the fight to your hard fought campaign.

One of the mistakes that an novice screenwriter makes is that they think that all you need a good plot, that is not true. It’s the characters that make a story more engaging. Think of a good character and you can design a plot around them. In this article I’ll explain the first three steps that most screenwriters do when they are writing a screenplay, these are; decide what genre and theme you would like to go for, think of an interesting central character and construct a plot around the character and theme.

What Is Genre And Theme?

The genre of the script is what category it falls into, such as; horror, romantic comedy, action adventure, gangster etc. It’s always good when you are writing your first screenplay to pick a genre you are familiar with. The theme is what your overall story is about. This should be able to be summed up in one sentence. For example you could have a film that fits into the action adventure genre but the theme could be a political story about good and evil.

Think Of Engaging Characters

There are many different ways to think of engaging characters. One technique I like to use is to take a notepad with me wherever I go. When I see somebody in the street I like to observe them, look at what they are wearing, imagine what job they might have, listen to how they talk etc. Soon you will have made up an entire fictional back story about this person.

Constructing Plot Lines

After I have the theme and character I always put that character in a situation. So if I have made notes about someone I have just observed on the street and the theme of the story is political, I will put that character into a political situation, like a protest for example. I then will imagine what they would do and how they would react to that certain situation and after that you have the basis of what could be a very interesting plot line.

This is just one way to think of an idea for a screenplay. If you have other techniques then by all means use them, or if you only want to use one of these idea then go ahead. After time you will develop your own ways of writing anyway. I would always advise getting as much screenwriting advice and tips as possible all through your screenwriting career. You never know when you might use a certain technique.
